Mowing crews price by the size and state of the lawn, not by the hour. A regular booking usually costs less per visit than calling someone once the grass is long.

For a small new-estate lawn, buying the gear costs about the same as six to ten professional visits. It pays off if you mow regularly and have somewhere to store it; a garage full of boxes after moving in is a good reason to book someone for the first few months.
Looking after new turf
- Keep new turf off-limits until it has rooted, usually two to three weeks, before the first mow
- Mow high for the first few cuts and never take off more than a third of the blade at once
- In south-east Queensland, mow every one to two weeks in summer and every three to four weeks in winter
- Edges along paths and driveways grow over quickly; a trim every visit keeps them neat
- For a rental, check the lease: lawns are often the tenant's job, but not always the nature strip
