Hot water systems and solar inverters: signs of trouble and repair costs

What a leaking electric hot water tank looks like, what a manufacturer service call costs, and what a solar inverter does.

This guide is general, educational information to help you understand typical costs and choices. Prices are approximate, based on examples seen in south-east Queensland in 2024–2026, and will vary with location, size, materials, supplier and time. Signs a tank needs attention

Book the manufacturer first if the tank may be under warranty: warranty repairs are free, but non-warranty work is paid on completion at the call-out rate.

  • Water or rust streaks down the side of the tank
  • Corrosion around the top fittings or relief valve
  • Water pooling at the base, or a constantly dripping relief valve
  • Lukewarm water or a tripping circuit breaker

Solar inverters

The inverter is the box on the wall that converts power from the solar panels into mains electricity. Its screen shows whether the system is producing power; a warning light or blank screen during the day is worth checking.

Inverters usually last about 10–15 years, less than the panels. Replacing one typically costs about $1,500–$3,000 installed (estimate), depending on size and brand.
