Timber fencing
The most common fence in new estates is a 1.8 m lapped-and-capped timber fence: overlapping palings with a timber cap on top. A typical price is about $120 per metre, plus extras such as a sleeper at the base.
On sloping lots the fence often sits on concrete sleeper retaining walls, fixed with brackets. Hardwood posts (H4 treated) and pine rails (H3) are a common specification.

Sharing the cost with neighbours
In Queensland, neighbours usually share the cost of a dividing fence equally. Often the first owner to move in builds it and asks the other for half, typically between $750 and $2,000 per boundary. Agree the fence type, height and cost in writing first.
